I haven’t stopped reading since I first could sound out my first word. Ever since I was a child, books have provided access to worlds which I could never have experienced or dreamed about otherwise. My first love, believe it or not, was reading about the prehistoric world and dinosaurs. In my teen years, I started to fall in love with some of the staples of literature: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the works of Shakespeare. They all made a deep and lasting impression on my worldview and the power of the written word to make people feel and to change minds. I still am a voracious reader. I try, emphasis on the try, to read a book per week. Fiction or non-fiction, I love it all.
I have read so many books, both great and mediocre, that I have an attuned radar to a good story and can usually tell within the first two chapters of a book if I am in the hands of a master storyteller. A writer needs a keen reader. A diligent reader can be an editor’s best friend. A careful reader makes an excellent editor who can detect plot holes, flat characters, stodgy dialogue; and it all helps to improve a manuscript. I am also a writer myself, and I understand that writing can be a solitary and isolating venture. It requires an intense introspection that few people are willing to go through to delve into the hearts and minds of human beings to put believable plots and characters down on the page. I understand the search for a perfect word, or turn of phrase, or obsessing over punctuation and copyediting to make your meaning clearer for readers. If you want someone who will treat your manuscript or academic paper as my own and put as much passion and work to make it the best it can be, let’s work together to create a publishable manuscript! I can’t wait to hear about your project.
